On National Tight Ends Day, it was fitting to see George Kittle, one of the NFL’s elite tight ends, deliver one of his best performances of the season. Kittle’s contributions were pivotal in the San Francisco 49ers’ 30-24 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, showcasing his prowess both as a pass-catcher and blocker.
The All-Pro tight end led the 49ers with six receptions, totaling 128 yards and scoring a touchdown. His role went beyond just catching passes; he was also instrumental in the run game, providing critical blocks that helped create space for his teammates. Kittle, known for his physicality and versatility, consistently helped pave the way for running backs and receivers, including wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who lined up as a ball carrier on multiple occasions. Kittle's blocking opened lanes for Samuel, underscoring his impact as an all-around player.
This game also marked a major milestone in Kittle’s career, as he reached his 500th career reception, placing him among the top receivers in the 49ers’ storied franchise. He now ranks fifth in franchise history for career receptions, trailing only 49ers legends Jerry Rice, Terrell Owens, Roger Craig, and Dwight Clark. This feat also elevated him to third in all-time receiving yards for the team, behind Rice and Owens.
Reflecting on his achievement, Kittle expressed gratitude for his journey with the 49ers. “It’s an honor,” Kittle said. “I’m thankful I got to be a part of an organization with very high standards of how they play football. Thankful that they’ve kept me around for a long time. I’m striving every day to be better than the day I was before, and continually prove that I need to be on the San Francisco 49ers’ roster.”
Joining the ranks of Rice, Owens, Craig, and Clark is no small feat, and Kittle emphasized his commitment to contributing to the team’s legacy. “To be on the list with any of those names — any list you’re on with Jerry Rice is a good thing, but to be with all those other guys is fantastic, and it’s an honor,” Kittle said. “I think in college I learned you want to leave your jersey in a better place, and that’s all I’m striving to do every single day, and I know those guys did that.”
Kittle has a notable history of big performances against Dallas. Last year, he posted a three-touchdown game against the Cowboys, which helped propel the 49ers into the playoffs. This recent performance adds to his legacy against Dallas and could help spark a similar push as the team moves deeper into the season.
The timing of Kittle’s standout performance was especially fitting given that he’s the creator of National Tight Ends Day, a celebration that’s now recognized league-wide. On Sunday, tight ends across the NFL made history, collectively amassing a record 177 receptions — the most ever in a single week for the position. Kittle’s influence in founding National Tight Ends Day underscores his leadership both on and off the field and his commitment to the position’s visibility and appreciation.
Kittle’s celebration started early as he led all 49ers tight ends — Eric Saubert, Brayden Willis, and Jake Tonges — out of the tunnel during pregame introductions. “That was my idea,” Kittle said. “We had four active tight ends for the first time this year, so I was really excited about that. It’s a holiday trying to celebrate all tight ends, not just the guys who get a bunch of targets.” His enthusiasm for including his teammates demonstrates his appreciation for all the tight ends’ roles, whether they are blocking, catching, or playing on special teams.
Kittle’s bond with his teammates in the tight end room is evident, and he’s proud of what they bring to the team. “Tight ends are the greatest on special teams, goal-line stuff. Just happy to have them all run out with me. I really do appreciate my tight ends room this year; they’ve been fantastic,” he added.
The 49ers, now in a strong position with Kittle at the helm of the tight end group, will take a week off to rest and recover before traveling to Florida to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10. With Kittle leading the charge and continuing to elevate his game, the 49ers are well-positioned to keep their momentum rolling.
