Sanju Samson's recent performances have showcased his impressive growth as a key batter for India, marked by a record-breaking innings that has earned him accolades. In the series opener against South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban, Samson struck an impressive 107, setting a new benchmark for the highest individual score in a T20I between India and South Africa. This feat surpassed David Miller's previous record of an unbeaten 106 in Guwahati back in 2022, emphasizing Samson's evolving stature as a formidable T20I player.
Amid this
remarkable phase, Samson credited India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, for
boosting his confidence and solidifying his position in the team. Samson's
journey to consistency in international cricket has not been without
challenges. For years, he struggled to maintain his place in the Indian team
due to sporadic opportunities. However, the landscape changed following the
retirements of stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, paving the way for
Samson to take on the role of an opener.
The turning
point in Samson’s career came when he hit back-to-back centuries in T20Is,
becoming the first Indian batter to achieve this milestone. This stellar form
was initiated last month when he scored a career-best 111 in the final T20I
against Bangladesh in Hyderabad. Building on this momentum, he showcased
another magnificent performance by scoring 107 against South Africa, earning
him the Player of the Match award.
Samson revealed
the key conversation that significantly impacted his mindset and approach.
Speaking to Jio Cinema, he recounted how Suryakumar Yadav, known for his
leadership and positive influence, approached him during the Duleep Trophy.
Yadav assured Samson of a stable role in the upcoming matches, stating, "You are going to open for India
in the next 7 matches, no matter how much you score." This
vote of confidence from the captain gave Samson the reassurance he needed to
play freely and express himself on the field.
Additionally,
Samson shared the motivating words from former India head coach Ravi Shastri
before his crucial innings against Bangladesh. Shastri emphasized the
importance of scoring a "big hundred" and instilled belief in
Samson’s capabilities, saying, "Sanju! You just need that one big hundred. I am telling you.
And you will be fine." These words resonated deeply with
Samson and contributed to his newfound form and resilience.
Samson's
flourishing performance has not only cemented his place in the team but has
also underscored the significance of support and trust from team leaders. India
will look to continue this momentum as they face South Africa in the second
T20I of the series on Sunday in Gqeberha.
